CHORAL ESSENCE NEWSLETTER
We Did What?
What did our unique vocal ensemble from the Tamp Bay area never intend to do? A Christmas concert! Well we did it and, in spite of our busy schedule, we had a ball! Choral Essence opened our Christmas season with a benefit concert for CCO [Church and Community Outreach] at St. Matthias Lutheran Church, Clearwater, which is our rehearsal-site. It was wonderful to connect with such a receptive and appreciative group and also connect over wine and dessert following the concert.
After attending an impressive Dunedin Concert Band performance last year, we decided to accept an invitation to open their Christmas concert with an extended choral prelude and three combined numbers. This was a first for the band and the experience was grand! About a thousand were in attendance at the Dunedin Community Center which filled to overflow about 45 minutes before the performance. This year we are cultivating the Dunedin area as our target audience. We have another Dunedin venue at First Presbyterian Church, March 27, 3 pm and a return engagement with the band May 13 at 7:30 pm when we open for the 8:00 patriotic band concert at the Dunedin Community Center.
Revving up for 2011
2011 is the fourth concert season for Choral Essence and we remain a dedicated group to choral excellence and community outreach through benefit concerts.
Our first program “Sassy with Class” is a high-spirited and stylish concert of choral gems from classical and Avant-garde to jazz and Broadway, including the perky medley Thoroughly Modern Millie and the touching Seasons of Love from “Rent”. With audience participation, we will create the sounds and awe of a Florida thunderstorm during the performance of Listen to the Rain. This promises to be a unique, fun and exciting concert.
Our second program, “Rhapsody In Rhythm”, is alive with energy as we sing a medley including: Rhapsody In Blue, Fascinating Rhythm, Crazy Rhythm and I Got Rhythm. Also included is an updated arrangement of Gershwin’s ’S Wonderful, original music by Arthur Goetze, and season favorites.
We will open our 2011 season with a presentation of “Sassy with Class” at Trinity Presbyterian Church, February 6, 3 p.m., with a concert to benefit Religious Community Services (RCS). We love the congregation, acoustics, not to mention the Baldwin grand. Also, we were pleased to be invited back to the Peace Memorial Presbyterian Concert Series to present “Rhapsody In Rhythm”. In fact, since the series is planned a year in advance, they extended their season to include Choral Essence in a return engagement on Sunday, April 3, 3pm.
